Douglas McNabb
Founder, Competitor, First Club President
Inducted: 2008
Douglas McNabb was born into a curling family in 1920 in the St. James district of Winnipeg,
Manitoba. McNabb’s father was a founder of the Deer Lodge Curling Club – located only a few blocks from the family’s home. Young Doug also loved curling and, in 1940, followed in his father’s footsteps, skipping his high school team to victory in the Manitoba High School Championship.

During World War II, McNabb served in the Canadian Air Force, flying night fighters from a base in Southern England to battles over
France. After the war, he returned to
Canada, and in 1952, moved to the
San Francisco bay area.
McNabb and his brother-in-law, Douglas Hossack, were two of the founders of the San Francisco Curling Club (SFCC.) McNabb and Hossack missed the curling of their earlier years and so teamed up to find other curlers in their new hometown. They were lucky enough to find not only curlers, but also those with the means to build a club. When the SFCC began operations in 1958, its members enjoyed a four-sheet dedicated facility in
Mountain View.
McNabb remained competitive and skipped a team to second place in the United States Men’s Curling Championship in 1961. It is still the best finish ever achieved by a
California team in this event. McNabb went on to skip
California teams in five other national championships, ending his run in
Utica,
NY in 1978.

After he retired, McNabb moved to Arizona. He returned to the bay area following the death of his wife, Phyllis, to be closer to his children Brenda and Waid.

McNabb returned to curling in 2007 to throw the first rocks at the San Francisco May mini-spiel and the inaugural WineCountry Curling Club bonspiel. He is still at his playing weight of 142 pounds.
