California curling and training facility to open in Fall 2018.

OAKLAND, CA September 26, 2017 — The San Francisco Bay Area Curling Club (SFBACC) is thrilled to announce plans to build California's only dedicated curling facility, to be located in Oakland. The ice center will open in Fall 2018, supporting the winter sport’s growing popularity in the western U.S.

The nonprofit sports organization has entered into a lease agreement at 8450 Enterprise Way in Oakland, CA. The dedicated facility will support SFBACC’s continued growth, and allow the club to offer expanded programming to coach and develop new curlers interested in the sport, including youth programs, wheelchair curling, and competitive play at all levels.

“It’s a game-changer,” said Sarah Walsh, president of the San Francisco Bay Area Curling Club. “The growth of our sport is at the heart of what we do. With our own ice, we’ll be able to offer more programming at better times and less cost, making it easier for Bay Area residents to fall in love with curling.”

The nearly $1M buildout will be primarily funded by the curling community, however the club is also seeking corporate donors and sponsors to complete its fundraising goals.

The curling center is expected to attract a record amount of local interest following the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. The facility will also play host to several recreational and competitive curling events each year, attracting athletes from around the world and supporting local businesses and hotels.

The San Francisco Bay Area Curling Club holds regular “Learn to Curl” events and lessons for people interested in the sport at its current shared-ice locations at the Oakland Ice Center, and at Solar4America Ice in San Jose. Information on upcoming events and locations can be found on the club’s website at www.bayareacurling.com.

About Curling
Curling is a 500+ year old winter sport where players slide granite stones down a sheet of ice toward a target known as the “house.” Teammates use brushes to “sweep” the ice in front of the stone to help guide its final location. Scoring is determined by the final position of each team’s stones. The sport utilizes a combination of skills, including strategy, balance, and endurance. Curling became an official Winter Olympic sport in 1998.
